- Typos and grammar errors. A single typo signals carelessness. Read your CV aloud, then ask a friend to.
- Vague duties instead of achievements. "Responsible for sales" tells the reader nothing. "Closed $1.2M in B2B sales in 2025" tells them everything.
- Generic objective statements. "Looking for a challenging role…" wastes the most valuable real estate on the page. Use a specific summary instead.
- Listing every job since high school. Cap older roles at one line if you must include them at all. Focus on the last 10 years.
- Walls of text. Recruiters scan. Break content into bullets with whitespace.
- Unprofessional email addresses. partyboy42@… is not the email you want recruiters to use.
- Mismatched formatting. If one job has bullets, all jobs should. If one date is "Jan 2024", they all should be.
- Buzzword soup. "Synergistic results-driven thought leader" reads as zero substance. Be specific.
- No file naming hygiene. Save your CV as Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf, not cv-final-v3-actually-final.pdf.
- Skipping the cover letter. When a role asks for one, write one. Skipping signals you don't really want the job.
